Kennywood
Take a trip back in time at Kennywood, one of the country’s most popular and long-standing traditional amusement parks located in Pittsburgh’s West Mifflin area. Despite undergoing countless transformations since first opening in 1898, Kennywood has delicately persevered its park history and traditions, while successfully incorporating 21st century additions and upgrades to its rides and character. Over 31 major rides, including thrill rides, water rides, kiddie rides, roller coasters and classic rides, pack the park. Time-honored rides like the Jack Rabbit, Log Jammer, the Turtle and the park’s oldest flat ride called the Whip remain established favorites of park-goers. And don’t forget the food that certainly does not disappoint. From funnel cakes and cotton candy to everyone’s favorite Potato Patch fries, Kennywood offers more than 30 snack carts and beverage stands throughout the park. Of course, guests are always welcome to pack their own picnic basket from home to enjoy under one of Kennywood’s many outdoor pavilions. Come experience for yourself why this National Historic Landmark has consistently been named among America’s best amusement parks.
Pittsburgh’s Duquesne Incline
There are few better ways to take in the breathtaking views of Pittsburgh’s Point, cityscape and surrounding three rivers, which USA Today Weekend Magazine named amongst its “10 most beautiful views of America” than from its Duquesne Incline. Since first opening to the public in 1877, the incline quickly evolved from a revolutionary cargo carrier into one of the city’s most reliable commuter and tremendously popular tourist attractions that has made countless pop culture appearances, including the 1983 movie “Flashdance”. At just 6 mph, the incline travels on a 794-foot track at a grade of 30.5 degrees and provides riders with a unique and all-encompassing perspective of Pittsburgh. The incline’s upper station, located atop the picturesque Mount Washington neighborhood, is the preferred departure point for tourists and features a historic look back on the evolution and restoration of this iconic wooden cable car. In addition to individual rides, group tours are also available and include a peek into its machine room, a visit to the gift shop, a museum tour highlighting Pittsburgh industry and culture and, of course, a 400-foot high panoramic view of the downtown skyline from the incline’s observation deck. The Duquesne Incline operates 365 days a year for fares ranging from $5 round trip for adults to $2.50 round trip for children (ages 6-11). Fare for children under five and seniors ages 65 and older are free.
Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium
You may not think of elephants, red pandas, polar bears or Western Lowland gorillas when you think of Pittsburgh wildlife, but that’s exactly what you’ll find among the more than 4,000 mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians and fish that call the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium home. Get up close and personal with roughly 475 various species of animals, 22 of which are considered endangered, at the zoo’s African savanna exhibit, Water’s Edge, Tropical Forest enclosure, PPG Aquarium and Asian Forest. As one of a select number of zoo and aquarium combinations in the country, the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium is truly a one-of-a-kind attraction. Approximately 77 acres compose the zoo’s seven themed areas that feature interactive exhibits, including its Kids Kingdom that helped earn the zoo its recognition as one of the top children’s zoos in America. Check its public calendar to see what special family friendly events are being offered during the time of your visit for even more fun.
Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball at PNC Park
Grab the peanuts and Cracker Jack and put on your favorite Pirates jersey for a game at Pittsburgh’s stunning PNC Park. While the traditional ballpark atmosphere remains intact, modern amenities and fan-centered comfort have been incorporated since first opening in 2001, including all-you-can-eat seats. Kick off your Pirates game at Federal Street’s Family Fun Zone then head inside to the park’s Kids Zone for continued family fun. Stay after the game to run the bases like your favorite players. For a true fan-focused experience, book a 90-minute interactive tour of the ballpark that gives you an exclusive look at the stadium’s hidden gems.
