When it comes to good old-fashioned family fun, there are few better ways to beat the heat and make summer memories than by spending a day at Kennywood. With a mix of more than 31 traditional and modern rides and over 30 refreshment carts, snack stands and restaurants, it’s no surprise that this Pittsburgh area park remains among the country’s most favorite and most visited classic-style amusement park. With so much fun packed into one park, navigating Kennywood presents unique challenges to park goers and out-of-town visitors. Get the most out of your next Kennywood visit with these five tips and tricks.

1. Visit during the off-season or shoulder periods

While any time is a great time to make your own Kennywood memories, planning your trip during off-season or shoulder periods can help you get the most out of your day. Park crowds are often lighter on Sundays throughout May and June as well as weekdays throughout the remainder of the summer. If you’re not afraid of a little rain, consider spending a cloudy day or one in which the weather calls for the potential for light rain at the park. Many guests are deterred by the thought of less-than-ideal weather, which leads to lighter crowds; however, should Kennywood have to close early due to inclement weather, the park provides a rain check for guests (offer not valid to season pass holders). Be willing to dodge a couple of raindrops and you just may end up with two Kennywood visits for the price of one!

2. Arrive early

Start your Kennywood day early to avoid long lines, too-tired kids and frustrated parents. This tip applies to both entering the park and at popular rides and attractions. Kennywood recommends beginning the fun at the back side of its park and working your way toward the front. If water rides are on your must-ride list, get in line for those earlier in the day or wait until later in the evening as lines tend to be shorter at those times. Both the Log Jammer and Raging Rapids are located toward the back of the park, making them a great place to start your riding.

3. Make lodging reservations directly with the hotel

If you plan to stay overnight near the park, avoid using hotel brand call centers and instead book directly with the hotel. Ask to speak with the hotel’s revenue manager who can help you score the best bargain on your stay. You can also check Kennywood’s hotels and lodging partners for unbeatable deals and exclusive offers featuring unpublished rates. Some hotels also offer packages for park goers that include special offers like Kennywood FunDay passes and two-day admission to the nearby Sandcastle Water Park.

4. Use apps for the attraction or city you plan to visit

Smartphones have put navigating Pittsburgh and its many attractions at your fingertips. The ease and convenience of various apps can help ensure a pleasant trip. From checking the weather and booking a hotel to finding local public transportation and capturing your favorite Pittsburgh memories on Yinztagram, you can virtually explore and plan your upcoming trip in just a few minutes. Search your app store for Pittsburgh-themed apps.

5. Invest in a solid GPS

An updated and reliable GPS system is a must when it comes to navigating a city like Pittsburgh with its countless bridges, tunnels and construction detours. If you don’t have a traditional GPS system, your smartphone can be beneficial to getting around thanks to apps like WAZE, Google Maps, Citymapper and other new apps.
