There’s no denying that Pittsburghers love their food, much of which is unique to the western Pennsylvania region. For instance, the city’s popular Primanti Brothers’ Italian bread sandwiches, piled high with grilled meat, tomatoes, coleslaw and French fries, is a rite of passage for many Pittsburghers and out-of-town visitors.

Kennywood park can certainly hold its own with its three basic food groups that highlight funnel cakes, burgers and hot dogs, candy and its iconic Potato Patch fries. In fact, Kennywood’s Potato Patch fries were named among the best French fries in America, making Buzzfeed’s list of the 23 French Fries You Need To Eat Before You Die and winning numerous awards for Best Potato at an Amusement Park. Learn more about Potato Patch fries along with Kennywood’s other nostalgic eats that are a favorite of park goers.

Potato Patch Fries

Undoubtedly the park’s most famous food is its Potato Patch French fries. More than a half-million servings of this Kennywood favorite are sold to park goers over the course of the park’s fourth-month season, earning these spuds the No. 1 spot on Kennywood’s best-selling food list. Many Pittsburghers consider Potato Patch fries to be the best fries in the ‘Burgh. For more than 40 years, countless Kennywood guests have fueled up on the more than 500-pounds of Idaho potato spuds that are cut, fried and served hot in a one-pound serving each day. Choose from its original fresh-cut French fries, bacon and cheddar fries or extra cheese fries, each topped with your choice of Heinz Ketchup, brown gravy and more.

Sweet Eats and Cool Treats

Calories don’t count when you’re at Kennywood, so indulge in the incredible deep-fried Batter Dip’t Oreos, batter Dip’t Rice Krispie Treats or a huge funnel cake from Star Funnel Cakes, located near the Log Jammer. Amp up the yum-factor with a funnel cake supreme that comes topped with ice cream and strawberries. If you’re craving something a little cooler, Kennywood has tons of chilled eats, ranging from its futuristic Dippin’ Dots to traditional ice cream wafer cones from the Golden Nugget. Dippin’ Dots are always a hit with the kids who get a kick out of the look and taste of these pearl-sized ice cream pills, served at minus-40 degrees in a five-ounce paper cup. Traditionalists, however, will drool over the huge wedge of ice cream packed into a double wafer cone that has been dipped into gooey, slightly warmed chocolate, covered in sprinkles and topped with a bright red maraschino cherry.

Sandwiches

There are few options more filling than Kennywood’s sandwiches, available from a number of eating venues in the park. Fill up on panini sandwiches and burgers from Pizza Pavilion, kielbasa and bratwurst from Backyard BBQ or burgers, hot dogs and chicken sandwiches from the famous Johnny Rockets. Parkside Café also serves up a great selection of hot and cold sandwiches. A Philly beef and cheese sandwich from Midway Refreshment Stand is a popular pick among park goers. Whatever you choose, be sure to save some room for a hot sausage sandwich that comes complete with red peppers, grilled onions and fresh bun at Pagoda.

Sweets and Candy

For many park goers, the final stop of the night is marked by a visit to the Kandy Kaleidoscope, located across from the Garfield’s Nightmare (formerly the Old Mill) and the Sky Rocket. Put some pep in your step with its selection of chocolate-covered pretzels, red licorice whips, lollipops, jumbo pralines, assorted candy, caramel and candy apples and Kennywood’s famous fudge. And don’t leave the park without taking home some cotton candy. Kennywood keeps its machines running from open until close for the freshest prepared cotton candy. Stop by the cotton candy wagon conveniently located near the park’s entrance tunnel. It’s the perfect companion for your ride home.
